I just heard the news of John's passing. My deepest sympathy go out to his family and friends. I had the privilege of working at Pearce with John. We had many great discussions and he truly was dedicated to his profession. As a fellow colleague he was always willing to help and share his knowledge and wisdom. He will be missed by all who knew him. May your beautiful memories sustain you in the months ahead.

This is very sad news indeed. The collective heart of the Petos goes out to Auntie Sheila, John and Krista. I know Mom is shattered to lose her crazy little brother. My family is a funny one. We don't get together across the great distances that separate us all that often but Uncle John's influence has been felt my entire life. He was legendary for his quirky humour, his historical knowledge and research into the geography of anywhere any of us lived. My letters to and from him are a fond memory of my University (pre-email!) days and his emails were also a source of amusement in more recent years. Our trip to the Rock last summer was an absolute highlight and I am thrilled my kids got to spend time with the NFLD family and experience the culture of that unique place. It is also humbling while not surprising to see all the tributes from former students here. He clearly had a big impact on the lives of many in and outside of his family. It is hard to know what else to say beyond he will live on in our hearts. Sheila, John & Krista - i hope you will come see us in CT. Love to you all - John (and Beth, Cameron & Alex)

Dear Aunt Sheila, Krista and John
Our sincere condolences for your loss. While we did not get to see Uncle John much he is very fondly in our memories. I have kept all the funny emails he sent me. They always made me laugh with his imagery and Newfoundland stories. My children love the books he sent - particularly Down by Jim Long's stage.. this one is a keeper. Much love to all. Mr. Lynch had a huge impact on my life. He inspired a love of English literature in me that led me to get a degree in it in university. My ability to write well led me to a career in the non-profit world and later government. He was an English teacher without parallel who used song lyrics to teach us to love poetry and who used Shakespeare to teach us to love the written word. He will be deeply missed.
My very sincere condolences to the family.

Dear Family,
John's passing leaves me very sad. Like many others, I had the privilege of having him as my English teacher at Pearce Regional High. Without question, he taught me a lot of wonderful things that served me well in life and I would be honoured to have someone of his character and commitment teach my children.
"Mr. Lynch" was a legend at Pearce. He was respected for being an extremely demanding, professional and competent teacher. He also made us smile and laugh. For me, it was when he threatened "to pull my teeth out with a pair of rusty vice grips" after I made him read my 1200 word essay on "Pink Floyd - The Wall" that was actually 10,000 words long. I deserved that. Jokes aside, you should be very, very proud of John for the positive impact he has had on thousands of people.
In the final analysis, John was a legend because he cared. He cared about teaching, he cared about his school and, most of all, he cared about his students. I feel very fortunate that I was one of the students that he cared about. I will always miss "Mr. Lynch," but I will never forget him.
With great love and affection from my family to yours,
Chris Grandy, Ottawa (Formerly Garnish)

My heart felt condolences to the family of Mr. Lynch. I had the privilege of being a student of his from 1979-1982. As I read through the condolences and the many posts on Facebook, I felt inspired to write a few words to honour him:
Did you know
When you were learning all the things you learned
Pausing slightly as each page turned
When you were dreaming of the lives you'd touch
Thinking, "That won't happen, it's just too much"
When you were teaching all those eager minds
That we were learning the whole time
Did you know you touched so many souls
Inspired us all through the highs and lows
Made us see that we each could be
Anything that we chose to be
Thank you Mr. Lynch

I am so very saddened to hear of the passing of one of my favorite teachers. I was never great at literature and with his help and mentoring I went on to University and did English as my major!! Without his wonderful ability and steadfast belief in me I could never have done this. I appreciated every time he took the extra time to explain all I could not grasp. I can see him in my mind's eye walking down the corridor with that saunter and books tucked under his arm. God bless him for the countless extra miles he went for all of us while I went through Pearce High School. He was such a mentor around the library and I enjoyed every minute of his dry wit. God bless and keep you all as you go through saying good bye. In the days ahead I wish you all peace and comfort as everyone works their way through grieving his loss. My deepest sympathy.

Like many students Mr.Lynch was my grade 11 English teacher and it is with great sadness that I read of his passing. What I remember most about him was that the more passion he was able to instill in us about a topic, novel, short story or poem then the more passionate he became. It was my favourite subject in high school and in my final year he was without doubt my favourite teacher. I learned so much from him and I can still see him saunter into our class with books tucked under his arm ready to enlighten our often sluggish and sleepy brains. I smile now remembering that time in my life....that was 34 years ago and I never forgot him. What a wonderful man and an amazing teacher.
